I chose vertical grain Douglas Fir for these night stands after using it on a small wall cabinet.  I’ve always admired the vertical grain and how the end grain contrasts so nicely with it.  It’s a relatively soft wood which requires sharp tools and patience when dovetailing but I think the results are worth it.  Each night stand measures approximateely 16″ deep by 24″ wide and 24″ high.  The drawers are made of Red Oak and slide on shop made runners also of Red Oak.  
Putting that black liner around the drawers sets them off and adds a stark contrast to the quiteness of the wood grain.  The black leather handles emphasize  that feature and the way the units sit on their stand almost give them a sense of animation.  This is my original design and they are finished with Polyx Hardoil #3043.
