Ribbon Sapele and Rosewood Envelope Box with Ebony Accents
This is an envelop box I made for my wedding on March 25, 2023. Some 24″ long, 10/4 thick quartersawn ribbon Sapele I found at my local lumber yard inspired this project. I resawed the Sapele to get my four side and bottom. The dovetails, 11 per corner, are all hand cut and fitted. The lid is Brazilian Rosewood beveled around the outside. The Ebony lid on top is hiding the envelope slot. It is fixed in place using rare earth magnets and easily slides to reveal the slot.
The box locks using a half mortise lock and key. The hinges are Brusso, along with the lid stays and feet- all in brass. The finish is french polish using John Coffey’s technique. I was fortunate enough to take his class and an additional private lesson last year.
