Carved Moravian Workbench
After 10 months of effort, the workbench I’ve been dreaming of for years is finally done. It’s a 5.5 foot long Moravian style bench with a ~14 inch wide work surface and a tool/shavings tray. It’s made of ash with white oak “aprons.” Cherry, jatoba, and sapele are used for various things that needed harder or more even grained wood. Carvings are all in the 17th-18th century style common in New England and Great Britian. You can really get into a groove carving those longer pieces. Very calming if you don’t mind the whack of the mallet. The joinery is big and was seriously fun to make. Most of the joints are drawbored while the main stretchers are half-wedged dovetails. The bench has two vises, a face vise and a homemade wagon vise, plus a homemade toothed planing stop. Finish is BLO with an oil-varnish top coat.
