Sculpted Rocker with Walnut and Ash
This chair is made from trees that fell down during a direcho that occurred several years ago. The walnut and ash trees were cut up by a portable bandsaw mill set up in our front yard. I made the first sculpted rocker from the plans from Charles Brock out of cherry and it fit me perfectly. My wife wanted a more colorful rocker that was more her size. The back of the chair was reduced by 1 1/2 inches, the seat was shortened by 2 inches, and the legs were shortened by 1 inch. This meant I had to shorten the spindles and to maintain the proportions to the chair the upper shoulder of the spindle had to be lowered as well. I also had to shortened the length of the arms to match the shortened seat. She is did not want the rockers to be quite so long as the original and were shortened by 3 inches. The shaping of the rockers was a little challenging, trying to round them so the contrast and exposure of the different woods were equivalent. It was challenging but fun. I put the ash on the bottom of the rockers thinking that it is harder and more durable than the walnut.
