Art Deco Dining Table
This is an experimental work by Jnd-woodcraft Inc.. Elliptical geometry is used throughout the piece. The legs are based on semi-ellipses in a glue-lam construction for exceptionally strong legs. The stock was ripped to 0.15″ thickness and laminated in a mold followed by additional blocks to provide for the wider feet. Shaping was done by hand using spoke shaves, rasps and files. The top is tiled with a go bar deck using 1/4″ thick slabs of quarter-sawn white oak, black walnut, padauk and hard maple. The robust thickness of the top allows for damage to be sanded out and the top refinished. The decorative inner tile border used slices of a log made to produce the pattern shown (think guitar rosette construction). The finish on the top was conventional paste wood filler followed by three coats of polyurethane and then wet sanding to and buffing to a high gloss finish. More pictures of the project can be seen at jnd-woodcraft.com. Contact us through the website if you would like to see some additional images of molds or work-in-progress pics. The table is in service as our family dining table.
