Black Forest
This piece was inspired by a series of marquetry decorative panels I made some years ago. The idea was to create a stylized forest on the façade, and then, to bring an interactive side to the furniture piece, by creating sliding veneered panels with various essences and colors edges.
I build the whole body in quartered Oak, both for dimensional properties and to reveal the medullary rays in an attemps to jazz up the very strict lines of the piece.
The veneering was made on 4mm thick ply with fish glue (due to the low temperature in the shop this time of year). Each panel was then sanded to fit the rails precisely to allow free movement. The bog oak was brushed to a sheen and left as is, as any finish on it would blacken it and made the grain disappear way too much. A simple rub with a dry cloth makes any trace disappear.
The joinery is hand cut dovetails for the carcass and cased half-laps for the feet.
The door frame and its panels swings down to reveal the inside. Piano hinge, magnets and chains account for the hardware. Thick leather pads under the feet.
