Table for Six
The “Table for Six” design began with the need to fit a tricky space. Round wouldn’t quite fit, nor would square. A triangle seemed perfect… but ouch! So, I “softened” the sides and later discovered that this shape is called a Reuleaux triangle. This uniquely shaped table & chairs are made primarily of wenge and purpleheart, both solid and veneers. The wenge crest rails are veneered…this allowed me to use a single, solid wood chunk to create a pleasing arched grain pattern, front & back on each rail. The center of the table and chair crest rails, boast hand cut marquetry…showing six different species of branches in the fall season. Each side of the table features a hidden, pivoting and locking drawer. The drawers can be locked (in order to move the table through a doorway, for instance) and unlocked with a leaf-shaped “key” which can be hidden (magnetically) underneath the table near any one of the three legs. By placing the key near the centre of the table, a pin is released, a dial is turned and the drawers pivot smoothly open. The two areas featured in reds and purples are the favorite species (plum and fig trees) of the owners…my lovely lady and I! This beautifully shaped table seats six comfortably while maintaining a small footprint.
