Patience Chair
Carvings on furniture are most often done as an applied design. In this sense, the furniture is a canvas beautified by an ornate design.
But what if instead that carving has its agency to interact with the furniture?
I first started dwelling on this after taking photos of furniture in a field. The piece was interacting visually with nature rather than cast against a freshly starched backdrop. I’m not sure where this design concept will take me but this is the first test. And I chose mice as a nod to the work of Robert Thompson whom I discovered in the digging around for historical examples of what I was envisioning.
The Mouse on the crest is integral to the crest while the mouse on the set was carved separately and applied. Made in black walnut with a tung oil varnish finish.
