Sapele Game Table
I built this for a charming, retired couple who played backgammon every night after dinner. They asked me to design and build them a table to hold a tournament-grade backgammon board. They also wanted to be able to hide the game board during the day. Oh, they also played bridge each Tuesday, so if it could be a card table, that would be much appreciated.
I took design cues from their existing furniture and created an understated table made from Sapele with several hidden features. Knowing my client would use the table for both backgammon and cards, I made a mitered frame with a smooth curved profile to sit atop the leg structure to create a “soft” landing for forearms and elbows during extended use. The center panel sits in a recess in the mitered frame, so the top is flush. The center panel is lifted up with a magnetic handle that lives on the table’s underside. The panel reveals a recessed game board with troughs on either side to hold dice cups and backgammon chips. The underside of the center panel is inset with green leather to be a luxurious playing surface for a game of bridge.
