Hufschmid Iceman Inspired Tantalum – Richlite Top!
Introducing My Latest Build, an Iceman-Inspired Tantalum Model
I’m excited to present my latest custom guitar, created from a unique collaboration with a customer who desired a carved glass top. Given complete creative freedom, I explored a different approach to bring this vision to life.
Instead of actual glass, which would be too heavy and unconventional for my work, I used dark brown Richlite. Richlite is a durable, sustainable, eco-friendly material made from resin-infused recycled paper. It is very dense and extremely stable. I designed and had intricately engraved a broken glass pattern on the Richlite to achieve a visually striking effect.
The fingerboard features my exclusive ‘SpectraLum Inlays,’ which add an aesthetic reminder of shattered glass. This is completely unique in the guitar world and adds a distinctive touch to the guitar.
The guitar’s body shape outline is influenced by the Ibanez Iceman but modified to fit my preferences. The rest of the instrument design is entirely my own.
A key feature is the nut, carved from Torlon 4203—a material I pioneered for guitar making. It’s virtually indestructible, self-lubricating, and has excellent vibration transmission properties (something I discovered by mistake while carving a plectrum out of the material a few years ago). The nut also has a scalloped design, adding an extra detail to the overall look.
This guitar blends innovative design and craftsmanship, resulting in a unique instrument I’m proud to share.
