As a woodworker I get a perverse sense of satisfaction anytime I replace something from IKEA in my house. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with IKEA furniture. It definitely fills a certain niche in the world of home furnishings and I don’t want to sound like a furniture snob. But let’s be honest here, IKEA furniture has no soul or character. It simply meets a need, is affordable and of generally acceptable appearance.
I feel really lucky to have the tools and am slowly developing the skills to strive for something a bit more than “acceptable”. After all, it’s nice to have objects in your home that you are proud of, that bring you some small amount of joy when you use them, and hopefully that are considered beautiful too.
So, bye-bye IKEA Bekvam. You have served your purpose to allow my wife to reach the top shelves in our kitchen. Thank you for your service…
