Western Red Cedar Dresser with Pillowed Fronts
This dresser is made from western red cedar. The drawer fronts and cabinet doors are “pillowed” from the center out to create a softer look to the case. The rails and stiles are beveled to a center point to further emphasize a sense of depth. I used a 2” chisel and a Shinto rasp to form the pillows on the drawers and doors. I’m not sure how you would do it with power tools. The bevels on the rails and stiles were done with a spoke shave and rasp. The case sides, top and bottom are joined with dovetails, as are the drawers. The back is hand cut tongue and groove an is painted flat out flat black, the inside is satin white. I like to paint the inside backs of cabinet areas white so it brings more light into an otherwise darkened space.
