With all due respect, the "little duhickey", is the part that keeps the board from rising up off the table and kicking you in the face. Follow safety instructions and leave the anti-kickback safety mechanism on the saw. It's not in the way.
With all due respect, the splitter minimizes the chance of kick-back; it does little to prevent the board from rising upward then back toward the operator. Safer to use the splitter and riving knife together.
